'Every goodbye at the port was a rehearsal for death'

Carsten Jensen

Smash him and bash him is a raw song about violence, loss and an insatiable longing for the sea.

Judith Vindevogel, artistic director of musical theatre WALPURGIS, was commissioned by the Brussels Conservatoire to create the graduation performance of BA4 students, Musical department. Smash him and bash him became an exciting educational project for which she asked composer Peter Spaepen on board, in addition to housemate Stef Depover. Smash him and bash him is based on the epic We, the drowned by Danish writer Carsten Jensen. A dozen scenes highlight life ashore, told from the point of view of the small seafaring community in Marstal. We meet colourful characters such as the hard-hearted master Isager, the gang of boys around Hans Jorn, the helmsman Herman you had better be wary of, the widow Anna Agidia who can preen like no other and the young widow Klara Friis with her little son Knud Erik. Like a Greek choir, they traverse time and space, reconstructing, commenting on and singing about the essence of their existence and following with more than ordinary interest the doings of captain at rest Albert Madsen.
