Theatre maker Ebe Meynckens began his career at a young age as an actor and dancer. He performed in productions by, among others, HetPaleis, Fabuleus, and Malpertuis. For the past two years, he has been creating his own work, exploring, reinventing, distorting, or simplifying the medium of musical storytelling.
For his latest performance ‘Vagabond of fear. Bird for pain.’, he returns to a theme he has touched upon before. Addiction. He supplements his own experiences within his family system with a collaboration with OpStap. OpStap is a Ghent-based organisation that serves as a safe living room/haven for people with substance addiction. The stories, reflections, dreams and fears shared with him there form the basis of his new theatre text.
Remi and Anne, nephew and niece, are stranded on the same platform. Waiting for the same train, they are forced to reflect on everything that led to this moment. All the different forms and ways addiction has wreaked havoc on their family system and in their own lives. All the different ways so many people seem to want to escape the world they have collectively built. We don't just hear the conversation between the two, but also the stream of consciousness that races through the spoken words.
