Noise: More indians, less cowboys (8pm)

For years, artist Rose Van de Leest has been collecting plastic waste along the banks of the Scheldt together with, among others, Thierry Lavender. Over time, they have gathered a unique collection of bizarre figures and shapes for which Rose has built a reserve: a 5mx5m installation consisting of two floors with changing landscapes: mountains, desert, a jungle, a city, an industry, a battlefield, etc. Through this strange landscape, a miniature train cruises along 100m of train tracks with a camera on board that makes a road movie through the reserve in which the found figures are staged. During the performance, this road movie is projected on a large screen and accompanied by live musical improvisations and visual lighting effects. The audience has both a view of what is happening on and around the installation table and its projected effect.

In the context of the performance, there is also an exhibition provided with life-size photos of some striking plastic figures printed on canvas and workshops can be organised around plastic soup. This project is a work in progress with multi-disciplinary ambitions.

Both Rose Van de Leest and Rif are aware of the stereotypical nature of the term ‘Indians’. It creates an over-romanticised image or can even come across as polarising. At Rif, we would like to contribute to awareness about the impact certain words can have on perceptions. What used to seem obvious may not be so today. Rather than adapting the show's title, we want to give this dialogue a place in the performance. Washed-up figures come to life and bring stories that reach beyond the cliché of cowboy and Indian.
