WELCOME to the WONDERFUL WORLD of WALPURGIS & guests

THURSDAY 29 APRIL

Johan de Boose & Marija Pavlovic

The puppeteer and the demoness
Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo

In the run-up to the performance HAVEN 010 by WALPURGIS and 't ARSENAAL, which will be performed in Ostend and Antwerp this summer, Croatia is a rewarding theme to explore the strength and vulnerability of Europe. On his journey through former Yugoslavia, Johan de Boose puts his finger on the still fairly fresh wounds of Europe and listens to all he meets. Croatian clarinettist Marija Pavlovic plays Igor Stravinksy's Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo. She will also be heard in the performance HAVEN 010 this summer.

Byrning down the house
How long on earth does a person have to wait for a Talking Heads reunion? Chief David Byrne doesn't see the point for now, so it's time for plan B.
The Talking Heads are single-handedly revived by members of Fixkes, Daau, De Roovers, Flowers For Breakfast and the Kakkewieten, among others.

FRIDAY 30 APRIL

Nouvelles Musiques de Chambre - LIEGE
music by Erik Satie, John Cage, Baudouin De Jaer and Darius Milhaud

Jean-Pierre Peuvion is a highly driven clarinetist and teacher who manages to make playing and listening to contemporary music appealing every time. A few years ago, he founded an ensemble that specialises in the performance of contemporary music. The group is a unique mix of old hands in the business, young professional musicians, students and even amateurs. Especially for the FENIKS FESTIVAL, he and Les Nouvelles Musiques de Chambres-LIEGE pay tribute to the pleasantly disturbed world of Erik Satie. The icing on the cake are two unpublished compositions: A clarinet octail by Darius Milhaud and Letters to Erik Satie by John Cage.

Voice - Zoé Pireaux, Morgane Heyse, Katarina Van Droogenbrock, Yuhmi Iwamoto, Anne-Claude Dejasse
Clarinet - Rudy Mathey, Benjamin Bertrand, Vincent Jacquemin, Jean-Pierre Peuvion
Piano - François Olivier, Virginie Tasset, Pauline Gonzales, Pierre Van Linthout

JOJI INC
20 minutes en chantier - tone moment
Choreographer Johanne Saunier combines the experimental, playful and sometimes even grotesque vocal music of Récitations pour voix seule by Greek composer Georges Aperghis with movement. This creates space for an imaginary catastrophe; an individual conflict that the almost slogansque fragments from Life is a killer of John Giorno is thrown into worldly and banal reality.

Antoine Boute
This Brussels native writes novels, poetic texts and essays, and co-organises the performance festival Boslawaai in the Sonian Forest.
He is also an ex-notary clerk, conferencer, experimental Dutch teacher, experimental family head, pseudo-Mongolian performer and writer of fake polars. Expect an adventurous reading of his sonorous poetry.

Eurudike The Executioner
Until we meet again (mother) - tone moment
Within her WALPURGIS residency, Eurudike The Executioner works with Gangrene on Until we meet again (mother) which has World War I as its basic theme. The performance explores the loss that thousands of mothers faced when their sons died in the Ypres region. This personal and individual loss is tested against the collective loss of an entire generation. During the FENIKS FESTIVAL, she will do live recordings with mothers (mother's cry) and fathers (father's cry) to be integrated into the tone moment on Sunday.

SATURDAY MAY 1

Spectra Ensemble/Pieter Embrechts/Judith Vindevogel
Four Charms-songs by Peter Vermeersch
Frankenstein!!! by H.K. Gruber
Charms' poems 'for children' stand out for their very sudden and illogical leaps of thought, absurd and sometimes black humour and the tension between truth and lies. At Spectra's request, 'maverick musical mad scientist' Peter Vermeersch arranged three of the 12 Charms songs he wrote in 1997, commissioned by WALPURGIS, and adds a fourth arrangement especially for this festival.
Viennese composer HK Gruber wrote brilliant music to mocking nursery rhymes populated by monsters, cannibals and superheroes like Batman and Robin, Dracula and Frankenstein, Superman and John Wayne.
A concert for the young and not so young.

Braakland/Zhe Bilding/Philip Paquet
Over to you again
A late twentysomething. Well-educated. And she knows how to dress. Rents a flat in the city. She is alone. But a thousand voices echo in her head. She visits a shopping centre. In the outskirts of town. It is plenty of bargain time. And her head. It is racing.
The collaboration between comic strip artist Philip Paquet, theatre producer Adriaan Van Aken and musician Youri Van Uffelen led to a strip-with-soundtrack that not only adds layers and atmospheres to the reading, but also follows, determines or even slightly elevates the reading pace of the average reader.
A live reading concert of a comic-with-soundtrack.

Wilfried Van den Brande & Bart Van Caenegem
Don Quixote - music by Ravel, Ibert, Massenet and Leigh
As part of his residency at WALPURGIS, bass-baritone Wilfried Van den Brande delves into the main character from Cervantes' novel The ingenious nobleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. During the FENIKS FESTIVAL, he will sing some 'mad' songs and arias from the classic Don Quixote repertoire and the musical The Man of La Mancha.

WALPURGIS & guests
Libretto reading #5: Turandot
It remains very exciting to detach an opera libretto from the music and all the formal conventions that come with it. With great pleasure, WALPURGIS strips the skin off the sung texts so that their content can resonate in a different way. After Cosi fan tutte, Die Fledermaus, Don Giovanni and Falstaff WALPURGIS this time opts for the libretto of Puccini's last, unfinished opera Turandot.
With actors Wouter Hendrickx, Luc Nuyens, Dahlia Pessemiers, Gert Portael and Tuur De Weert, singers Lorenzo Carola and Bianca Van Puyvelde and Charlotte Asberg on piano.

SUNDAY MAY 2

Conservatoire royal de Liège conducted by François Deppe
Exotica By Mauricio Kagel - tone moment
François Deppe, who regularly collaborates with Ictus, Rosas and Thierry De Mey, accompanies nine students on a journey around the world during which they play no fewer than 40 different instruments. Exotica is a cult piece of music from the hippie years.

With Valentine Barenton, Alexis Bourdon, Romy Conzen, Louise Hottias, Joachim Ianello, Aurore Leloup, Dorothée Pietquin, Audrey Vangansbeke, Romain Vieslet

Thanks to Music Fund for lending the instruments.

Simonne Moesen & Kaat De Windt
Madama Butterfly (after Puccini) - tone moment
Actress Simonne Moesen - accompanied by pianist Kaat De Windt - shows the first results of a research project in which she confronts the romantic, idealised Western image of the geisha with the raw reality of real geisha life. In this public show moment, she balances between appearance and reality, humour and tragedy, love and death, hope and despair.

AEFMAT
Introduction to the Alexander Technique
free individual introductory lessons by several teachers from AEFMAT, the Belgian association for teachers of the Alexander Technique

STRUGGLE
Byla ne byla (there was, there wasn't) - tone moment
A village in the northernmost part of Russia. Four months dark, today the sun returns. The brass band prepares. A woman cries her lament. Two girls find a dead body in the tundra. The members of STRUIKEN - Geert Vandyck, Thaïs Scholiers, Evelien Van Hamme and Marie Peeters - got to know each other during WALPURGIS and FES' production Zilke in 2008. They show some excerpts from their first performance, which will premiere at 't ARSENAAL in September 2010.

Elvis Peeters & co
The atmosphere of big days
The first steps into the world: dance steps, marked against will by individualism. The creation of a punk magazine, the first concert, the first demonstration. Not waiting, acting itself. But where does it go? Who leads, who follows? The atmosphere of big days is a literary concert that draws on images, attitudes, musical approaches and motivations of a fascinating subculture from the 1970s and 1980s.
From and/or with Elvis Peeters, Nicole Van Bael, Gerrit Valckenaers, Koen Van Roy and Patrick Geeraerts
