An operetta about a society, clearly divided into classes,
so the chambermaid can play lady's maid
And the lady for Hungarian princess...
Where the lover turns to jail in the husband's dressing gown
Where the 18-year-old prince teaches his subjects to drink and where champagne is a key word
in short, a society where everything and everyone sings for joy,
where high notes pulverise crystal and where tenors liquefy altos and solidify them again....

In the aftermath of the New Year's Eve celebrations, WALPURGIS this season revisits its quirky reading of Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus, the operetta classic that is on the programme of the Wiener Staatsoper year after year around New Year. The text may be unfamiliar to you, but the music sings along from the first to the last note. And thanks to Sam Bogaerts' dazzling reinterpretation and the dazzling enthusiasm of a whole host of actors and singers, you are guaranteed a comical evening.

Review

'All the operetta clichés are present, but in this ostentatious display, the genre proves to be alive and well.'
