Dear reader,

In his book The microbes in us writes British science journalist Ed Yong:
'In fact, we are innumerable. Always a us, never a me.'

Microbes affect not only our gut flora, our bone structure and our immune cells. They change
also our brains and thus also determine our behaviour. 'Microbes,' Yong argues 'help us become who we are.

According to German-American philosopher Hannah Arendt, although every person plays the lead role in his own life story, he is not the sole author of it.
And Hans Dewitte, artistic director of the participatory arts organisation kleinVerhaal in Ostend, concludes:
'It is the multiplicity of people that shapes us. And that is a gift.'

In this wOwW! the focus is on six inspiring women who manage to move freely and courageously
between different identities and cultures.
Always a us, never a me.

Happy reading,

Judith
