les noces/svadebka/the wedding

................................................

Origins of an exceptional project.

In the late 1990s, Judith Vindevogel had a crazy dream: Les noces of Stravinsky stripped of its exclusivity. Above all, it was not to become a rigid concert but had to and would become a ritual event that 'infects the whole community'. Special attention would be paid to the composition of the artistic team (singers, musicians and actors), the location, the timbre, the theatrical attitude and the relationship with the audience.

An unforgettable Russian wedding

Everyone has gathered at Andronov restaurant for the wedding of Nastasia and Fetis. There seems to be no love or fledgling marital bliss in Chekhov's wedding: the herring and bread are sour, the lighting leaves much to be desired, the bride does not open her mouth all evening and the general is late. The moment the party gets out of hand, the groom's mother gives the sign for the marriage ritual. Exit Chekhov, enter Stravinsky with Les Noces. A wedding ritual that turns the group of actors, singers, musicians and audience into one big family.

The creation in Antwerp was followed by a tour of the Waterschei mines, an old riding school in Terschelling, an old railway shed in Charleroi and a big circus tent in Tarbes. Les noces/svadebka/the wedding was performed since its premiere in 2005: 45 times and had over 17 700 visitors.

Vindevogel fully succeeds. A diverse audience can be introduced to this often considered elitist work in an easily digestible way during an amusing evening out.
Saskia Vereenooghe, The Time

The most wonderful thing about this coup de théâtre is that the tempo present in the performance is accurately maintained and even stepped up. This has the not undeserving effect of irresistibly drawing in even an audience not at all familiar with Stravinsky, as one might fortunately expect at the Summer of Antwerp. (...) A strong concept, a show with a tight tempo, good actors, singers and musicians are the strengths of this performance.
Stephan Moens, De Morgen

Theatre, music, singing, skits, photography, food and drink making The Noces in a word lavish. As if companies that otherwise draw meticulously with black pencil have suddenly discovered the paint box.
Ilse Dewever, Gazet Van Antwerpen

Igor Stravinsky composed with Les Noces a delightful piece of primal music for four pianos, extended percussion and 16 singing voices.
Eddie Vaes, Zone 03/

All senses are served in this performance, including taste.
Erik Betten, Friesch Dagblad

It's party time and really everything is pulled out for this infectious feel-good performance.
